Ο βιβλιοφάγος Bill Gates

O ιδρυτής της Microsoft Bill Gates εκτός από την τεράστια περιουσία του φημίζεται και για το γεγονός ότι είναι λάτρης του διαβάσματος. Όχι απλά του αρέσει να διαβάζει βιβλία για να περνάει παραγωγικά τον ελεύθερο του χρόνο, αλλά έχει δηλώσει επανειλημμένα πως το διάβασμα παραμένει για αυτόν ο καλύτερος τρόπος να μαθαίνει νέα πράγματα και να δοκιμάζει την νοητική του ικανότητα. Μάλιστα έχει πει πως συνηθίζει να διαβάζει περίπου 50 βιβλία τον χρόνο, που σημαίνει πως αφού ο χρόνος έχει 52 εβδομάδες ο Gates καταφέρνει να διαβάσει κατά μέσο όρο ένα νέο βιβλίο κάθε εβδομάδα.

Αυτή του η συνήθεια δεν είναι κάτι που αποκόμισε σε κάποιο στάδιο της ζωής του αφού είχε πρώτα καταφέρει να γίνει δισεκατομμυριούχος, αλλά ήταν κάτι το οποίο συνήθιζε από μικρή ηλικία. Ήταν τόση η αγάπη του για το διάβασμα που οι γονείς του είχαν απαγορέψει να διαβάζει όταν βρισκόταν στο τραπέζι για να γευματίσει.

Τα πρώτα του αναγνώσματα αποτελούνταν από νουβέλες επιστημονικής φαντασίας μέχρι εγκυκλοπαίδειες. Οι προτιμήσεις του όμως άλλαξαν καθώς μεγάλωσε, παρόλα αυτά συνεχίζει να επιλέγει βιβλία από διάφορες κατηγορίες την στιγμή που ασχολείται ελάχιστα με βιβλία φαντασίας. Πλέον συνηθίζει να διαβάζει για επιστημονικά θέματα δίνοντας έμφαση σε τομείς όπως βιολογία και φυσική, ενώ δηλώνει μεγάλος φαν των βιβλίων που προσφέρουν ένα επιστημονικό ή μαθηματικό πλαίσιο για να κατανοήσει τον κόσμο. Όντας συμπρόεδρος στο Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, έναν κυρίως φιλανθρωπικό οργανισμό που διατηρεί μαζί με την γυναίκα του, διαβάζει αρκετά βιβλία που έχουν να κάνουν με την ανάπτυξη, την παιδεία, την φτώχεια και τις ασθένειες. Παραδόξως ο Gates σπάνια προτείνει σε άλλους βιβλία που αφορούν την επαγγελματική επιτυχία επιχειρήσεων καθώς και όσα ασχολούνται με την τεχνολογία. Στο προσωπικό του blog του ο Gates προτείνει αρκετά βιβλία που θεωρεί ενδιαφέροντα τη στιγμή που παρέχει ακόμη και αναλυτικά review για αρκετά από αυτά.

Ο ίδιος του έχει θεσπίσει κάποιους προσωπικούς "κανόνες" σχετικά με το διάβασμα τους οποίους και προτείνει ανεπιφύλακτα σε όσους θέλουν να αξιοποιήσουν στο μέγιστο τον χρόνο που αφιερώνουν σε ένα βιβλίο.

Πρώτον, κρατήστε σημειώσεις στα περιθώρια, ειδικά εάν πρόκειται για ένα βιβλίο που δεν είναι φαντασίας και προσπαθεί να μεταφέρει πληροφορίες ή μια ιδέα. Ο Bill Gates λέει πως οι σημειώσεις τον βοηθούν συγκεντρώνεται περισσότερο στο θέμα.

Δεύτερον, φροντίστε να τελειώσετε αυτό που ξεκινάτε. Ο Bill Gates δεν ξεκινάει ποτέ ένα βιβλίο που γνωρίζει ότι δεν πρόκειται να μείνει μαζί του μέχρι το τέλος. Αν και είναι εφικτό να αποκομίσετε γνώσεις διαβάζοντας το μισό ενός βιβλίου το γεγονός ότι δεν θα το ολοκληρώσετε θα μπορούσε να γίνει μια κακή συνήθεια.

Τρίτον, εκτυπωμένο βιβλίο είτε ψηφιακό δεν έχει σημασία, διαβάστε σε όποια μορφή σας είναι ευκολότερο. Αν και ο ίδιος παραμένει οπαδός του εκτυπωμένου βιβλίου δεν το κάνει για κάποιο συγκεκριμένο λόγο αλλά κυρίως γιατί έτσι έχει συνηθίσει όλα αυτά τα χρόνια.

Τέλος, αφιερώστε τουλάχιστον μια ώρα την φορά στο διάβασμα για να εξασφαλίσετε ότι σκέφτεστε αυτό που διαβάζετε και δεν απορροφάτε απλά τις λέξεις. Ο Gates επιμένει σε αυτό, καθώς πιστεύει πως όταν συλλογίζεσαι αυτά που διαβάζεις και σκέφτεσαι πως όλα αυτά επιδρούν στην ζωή σου και στις ζωές των άλλων τότε, αυτό το υλικό έχει πολύ μεγαλύτερη αξία.
